The Third All-Russian Ornithological Congress will be held in Petrozavodsk from February 2 to 5, 2027

The Third All-Russian Ornithological Congress is the next stage in the development of a pan-Russian scientific forum for the discussion of modern ornithological research. It builds on the experience and results of previous congresses and aims to consolidate the professional community, present new scientific data, and discuss key areas for the development of ornithology in Russia.

The Congress program includes plenary presentations by leading experts, reflecting both classical areas of Russian ornithology, in which the Russian scientific school has traditionally held a strong position, and new research approaches and topics reflecting current global trends. Planned areas of discussion include behavior, migration and navigation, bioacoustics, energetics, morphology and physiology, paleornithology, taxonomy, biology and ecology of birds, faunal and population structure studies, and species status monitoring. Particular attention will be paid to the conservation of natural ecosystems and biodiversity, the protection of rare and endangered species, the preparation of materials for regional and federal Red Data Books, and the analysis of the impact of climate change, anthropogenic landscape transformation, environmental pollution, hunting, and other factors on the status and dynamics of bird populations.

The Program Committee is accepting proposals for symposia and roundtable discussions at birdcongress@mail.ru until April 1, 2026. A symposium proposal must include its title, a brief abstract explaining the scientific significance and relevance of the topic, the names of two organizers (conveners) representing different organizations, and the titles of two papers for which preliminary agreements have been reached with the authors. The authors of the submitted papers may, but are not required to, serve as conveners for the symposium. The remaining three papers will be selected by the conveners based on a review of the abstracts submitted to the Congress. Conveners who have previously submitted preliminary symposium proposals are asked to confirm and resubmit their proposals using the proposed form; they will be considered official in the current cycle.

Information on the approved list of symposia and roundtable discussions will be published no later than May 10, 2026.

Subsequent newsletters will provide detailed information about plenary presentations, symposia, and roundtable discussions, participant registration, registration fees, abstract submission guidelines, the Congress venue, accommodation options, excursions, and additional events. Detailed information about the Congress will be posted on the website https://birdcongress.ru/.

The Organizing Committee invites sponsors and organizations interested in supporting the Congress to collaborate and requests that this information be disseminated among colleagues.

Application form for organizing a symposium or roundtable discussion:

1. Title of the symposium or roundtable discussion.
2. Brief summary (justification, up to 1000 characters).
3. Full names of two conveners.
4. Place of work, position, and email address of each convener.
5. The titles and authors of two keynote papers (for symposia only) will be provided. The remaining papers will be subsequently selected by the symposium organizers from among the abstracts submitted for that symposium.
